Term two in 12th grade English is all about communication skills, and the 12th graders recently had their first “speech challenge,” reading to CDS First Program students. In order to succeed at this challenge, the students had to practice reading many times, making sure they used their voices to show emotion and used gestures to make the story more entertaining. They also asked questions to keep the First Program students involved throughout the story. The result? The FP students absolutely loved being read to by their new 12th grade friends, and I think the 12th graders enjoyed themselves as well, while also working on their communication skills.
