On the final day in November, CDS played host to Dwight School of Seoul in a rematch of last years KAIAC White Division championship game. There was plenty of energy in the building, left over from from the pep rally earlier in the day and the two previous games- both of which went to overtime. Even 2016 Mr. Phoenix himself, recently graduated senior and former basketball team captain, Yun Sang “YS” Jeon made an appearance to support the team. Despite the positive vibes hanging in the air the team came out sluggish in the opening half, surrendering 21 first half offensive rebounds to the Lions of Dwight, 14 alone in the first quarter. Determined to fight until the very end, or at least until every last drop of sweat left his body, team co-captain Jace “Big Air” Kang was sidelined due to severe dehydration which required hospitalization after the game. With their co-captain on the sidelines and the game very much still in the balance Phoenix senior center and co-captain Caleb “King Kong” Kim rose to the occasion. He grabbed control of the game with a flurry of defensive stops converted into buckets in the 3rd quarter while showing a combination of brute force and finesse that has never before been seen at CDS. With the score tied in the 4th quarter and Caleb Kim carrying the team on his shoulders sophomore Phillip “The Phenom” Yoon (14 points, 10 steals, 8 assists) pushed the Phoenix ahead with a series of impressive plays in the backcourt. When the dust finally settled- around 9:00pm- the Phoenix players rose victorious from the ashes in a triumph that brought hope to all who have ever been held down or humiliated. The revenge of last years defeat left a sweet taste in the mouth of all the fans and CDS members proud to call themselves Phoenix on this day. In the 54-46 victory, Caleb Kim had set two new school records with 31 points and 27 rebounds- numbers that may never be matched by any player ever again. The undefeated 2-0 Phoenix will see their next action on December 7th when they travel to Kent to take on the undefeated 2-0 Merlin's of KKFS and the #3 ranked player in KAIAC, Aaron Bell, in a game that is sure to be a war. Let’s go Dalton!
